FSRU & FLNG: Two Sides of Floating LNG Infrastructure
As part of its wider programme covering LNG trading and pricing, supply and energy security, shipping, contracts, infrastructure, financing, risk, technology and geopolitics, LNG Geneva 2027 is developing a focused panel on FSRUs and FLNG facilities.
The discussion would compare their distinct roles across the LNG value chain and examine the commercial, technical and operational considerations shaping floating LNG infrastructure.
FSRU: Floating Storage and Regasification Unit
An FSRU is a specialised ship or floating platform that receives and stores imported LNG before converting it back into gaseous natural gas for onshore distribution networks.
Acting as a floating import terminal, an FSRU can provide a faster and more flexible route to new regasification capacity than developing a large permanent facility on land.
FLNG: Floating Liquefied Natural Gas
An FLNG facility produces, processes and liquefies natural gas directly at or near an offshore field. It stores the LNG offshore before transferring it to specialised carrier vessels for delivery to international markets.
Unlike an FSRU, which supports LNG imports and regasification, FLNG operates on the production and export side of the LNG value chain.
